Ever have a passage of Scripture hit you between the eyes?I read this simple parable the other morning and it really hit home...
In Matthew 21 Jesus said, 28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two
sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the
vineyard.' 29 " 'I will not,' he
answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 "Then the father went to the other
son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not
go. 31 "Which of the two did what
his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to
them, "Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are
entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.
32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you
did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even
after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.
As a Father, I totally get this. What kind of son do I want? The one who trusts me, loves me, and honors me enough to do what I ask.
What kind of people is God looking for? People who talk a good talk? People who say the right things, but do not do anything about it? People who mentally ascent to God's Word, but do not do what God asks them to do?
No, God is looking for people who act on his Word and join in his mission. Even if it's tough. Even if at times we want to resist and say "no." Still we trust in God enough, we love God enough, we honor God enough to respond with faith and obedience.
So, which son are you? I want to be the kind of son that says "yes" AND actually follows through.
