This amazed me...I've been reading through the Gospel of Luke with my wife. In most of the stories, people were amazed by Jesus - his wisdom, his power, his compassion. But in one story, Jesus was amazed by a person.
The person was a Roman centurion. He led soldiers in the Roman military. This centurion had a sick servant and wanted the help of Jesus to heal his servant.
Now, servants did not have much status and worth in society back then. The fact that this Roman centurion cared so much about his servant is pretty amazing in itself. But something else amazed Jesus about this man - his faith.
So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. (Luke 7:6-10)
This man amazed Jesus. How cool is that?!? To think we can amaze Jesus.
This man was humble. He knew he did not deserve Jesus' help or favor. Yet this man was also bold in his belief that Jesus cared and wanted to help. He also had a deep trust in Jesus' power.
I think this was the only time we find Jesus amazed in the Scriptures. I would love to have the kind of faith that amazed Jesus. I know that I am constantly amazed by him. I'd love to amaze him with concern for others, sincere humility, confidence in his love, and trust in his power.
How about it? Let's amaze Jesus today!
