REASONED: Goodbook 12-03-12

Goodbook messages arrive every Monday, Thursday, and Friday with a Scripture reading and ideas for how to apply the reading in our lives. We are reading through the book of Acts. For additional Scripture reading, you can follow the Advanced Track.

Reading: Acts 18:4

Every Sabbath (Paul) reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

Application:

I think sometimes people think faith and reason do not go together, like in order to have faith you have to check your brain at the door.  Paul did not think that.  In fact, he went to the synagogue every day to reason with the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.

He likely referred to the Holy Scripture and how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of Old.  He likely referred to the eye witness accounts of the resurrection.  He likely referred to historical events that confirmed who Jesus was.  Most likely he referred to his own story of how he encountered Jesus and how Jesus radically transformed his life.

Believing in God and believing in Jesus does take faith.  But we have many great reasons to believe.  You may have heard of Lee Strobel.  He was an atheist who set out to disprove that Jesus is the Messiah, our risen Lord and Savior.  Ironically, the evidence he discovered lead to him believing in Jesus and receiving him as his Lord and Savior.  He shared his findings in a book called The Case for Christ.  Strobel's curiosity was peaked.  He went on to write The Case for a Creator, The Case for Faith, and the Case for the Real Jesus.  He found lots of reasons to believe and continues to share them with others.

What are some of your reasons for believing in Jesus?  Have you ever written them down?  Have you ever shared them with others?

1) If you are struggling with your belief, talk with a pastor of church leader.  Read some books.  Do some research of your own.  There are a lot of reasons to believe in Jesus.

2) Write down some of the reasons you believe in Jesus.

3) Share those reasons with others.  You may start with other believers.  But the real goal is to give those who do not believe in Jesus, reasons to believe.
