Jesus once told a story about two builders - a wise and foolish builder. The story goes like this: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." (Matthew 7:24-27).
I feel convicted and challenged by this story. I've allowed myself to get so busy with my house, that I have not been focusing on building my spiritual house on the rock of Jesus. I have missed days of reading the Bible and reflecting on how to apply it. Even when I do read, I am so busy that I do not stop to think about my actions and how they line up with Jesus' teachings. I've missed days of blessing my family in the morning or reading the Bible with my son at night. I've missed days of reading a devotion with my wife and praying together.
Surely I want to provide my family with a nice house to live in. But what good is any of that if I do not help build our spiritual foundation on Jesus. Without a solid foundation on Jesus, the storms and the trials of life will destroy our marriage, our family, our ministry, our witness, our walk with God, etc. Time for me to get my priorities straight and work harder on my spiritual house.
How about you? How are you building your house on the rock?
