TEMPTATION: Goodbook 05-16-13

This past week I delivered a sermon about God's armor.  The Good News is that God provides all the power we need to win our spiritual battle against the schemes and temptations of the devil.  One piece of the armor is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  In the message, I proposed that Scripture becomes a sword when we memorize it.  That way it is ready for battle any time and anywhere.

I have started making a list of Scriptures that help me battle temptation.  Memorizing these verses turns God's Word into a weapon ready for battle against the devil.  This list is not comprehensive.  I simply jot down scriptures I run across that help me in areas I am tempted.  Below is a few of the verses on my list.  I pray they will be helpful for you.

Let me know:
1) Which verses you find helpful
2) Other verses that help you

Luke 4:8  Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"
1 John 3:5  But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
John 4:13-14  Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,  but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
John 8:11  "Neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
John 8:36  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
1 Corinthians 6:18  Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
1 Corinthians 10:13  No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
1 Corinthians 10:23  "Everything is permissible"-- but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"-- but not everything is constructive.
2 Corinthians 7:1  Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

Psalm 19:7-14  The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.  The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.  They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.  By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.  Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.  Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.  May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
