COMMANDS15 (Communion): Goodbook 05-27-14

One of our challenges for 2014 is to learn and live all 50 commands of Jesus.  Jesus told us that following his commandments is a way to love him and a way for his love and his joy to fill our lives (John 15:9-12).  In his Great Commission, Jesus tells his followers to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything he commanded us (Matthew 28:19-20).  So each week in this year we are learning and living one command of Jesus.  Here is our command for this week...

Week 15:

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you,” (Matthew 26:26-27).

Application:

Our country recently celebrated Memorial Day.  Do you ever wonder why we need a Memorial Day?  I read a quote that sums it up very well.  Mark Batterson wrote, “We tend to remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember.  That’s why we need a Memorial Day.”

How true that is!  I believe this is why Jesus gave us a memorial in his Last Supper.  We tend to remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember….

·         We tend to remember the hurtful things people have done to us.  Jesus us wants us to remember his incredible love and grace.

·         We tend to remember the problems in our world.  Jesus wants us to remember that he overcame the world.

·         We tend to remember our self-doubts and insecurities.  Jesus wants us to remember the high price that was paid to purchase us.

·         We tend to remember our failures.  Jesus wants us to remember his forgiveness.

·         We tend to forget Jesus in the busyness of everyday life.  Jesus wants us never to forget our desperate need for him.

·         We tend to forget our connection to others.  Jesus wants us never to forget that we are an integral part in the body of Christ.

·         We tend to forget the sacrifice Jesus made to set us free.  Jesus wants us never to forget that we can live free from the chains of sin and death.

·         We tend to forget the power of his death and resurrection.  Jesus wants us never to forget that his power can bring new life through his community of faith.

So Jesus broke bread and shared wine and he told us “do this in remembrance of me,” (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24).  Jesus commands us to come to his table and share his Supper in communion with his people because he wants to make sure we do not remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember.  For this reason it is essential to regularly celebrate the Lord’s Supper with a community of faith.  As you do, allow the moment to remind you of all the things worth remembering and help you release the things it is better to forget.

Make it a point this week to attend worship and partake in the Lord’s Supper.
