FASTING: Goodbook 07-12-12

For those who don't like fasting from food, here's another option...

Isaiah 58:6-8
6 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Anyone game to try this fast with me?

  1. Do we fast with food, or Pastor, do we fast with what we own?
I think the bigger sacrifice is to walk away from the wants, not the needs.
I think it is harder to part with the wants.
My table always has more than I need, in case some one shows up.
Should we not address our "needs"?

    1. We can fast in a number of different ways. Whether we fast with food or with things, the point is to remove something from our lives that will help us focus more on God. What I like about this passage, however, is that fasting is not just about us personally. It opens us up to the needs of those around us and compells us to action on behalf of others.
